The M11 metro is the cheapest and most traffic-proof way from Istanbul Airport (IST) into the city — about 35–40 minutes to Gayrettepe for roughly 38–39 TRY with an Istanbulkart, then a quick change to the M2 line for Taksim. The Havaist coach is the most comfortable single-vehicle option but slower in traffic, and a taxi is fastest door-to-door but by far the most expensive. This covers IST, Istanbul's main airport on the European side — not Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) on the Asian side.
Your main options
Istanbul Airport connects to the city by the driverless M11 metro, the Havaist network of airport coaches, and taxis. The right pick depends on your budget, your luggage, the time of day and exactly where you are heading.
Comparison: Istanbul Airport to the city
| Option | Journey time | Indicative fare (one-way)* | Frequency | Goes to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M11 metro | ~35–40 min to Gayrettepe (+ M2 change for Taksim) | ~38–39 TRY with Istanbulkart (about €1) | Every ~4–10 min; runs ~06:00–00:00 | Gayrettepe, then M2 to Sisli, Osmanbey, Taksim, Yenikapi |
| Havaist coach | ~90–120 min, traffic-dependent | ~355 TRY to Taksim (about €8) | Frequent; many routes run 24/7 | Taksim, Sultanahmet, Kadikoy and other set points |
| Taxi | ~45–75 min, traffic-dependent | ~2,100–2,600 TRY to Taksim/Sultanahmet (about €45–€60) | On demand | Any door-to-door |
*Fares and times are indicative and change frequently — Istanbul's lira fares are revised often and exchange rates move, so verify the current price officially before you travel and treat the euro conversions as approximate (indicative, June 2026). Public-transport fares are cheapest with an Istanbulkart, which you load at machines in the airport's metro station.
The verdict
- Best value and most reliable — M11 metro: by far the cheapest, immune to road traffic, and quick to Gayrettepe; the one downside is the change onto the M2 for central districts and that it does not run overnight (roughly 06:00–00:00). The default choice for most travellers in the daytime.
- Most comfortable single ride — Havaist: a seat with luggage space straight to set city points, and many routes run 24/7, which makes it the go-to for late-night or early arrivals — but expect a long ride in heavy traffic.
- Fastest door-to-door — taxi: the quickest when traffic is light and the easiest with heavy bags or a group, but several times the cost of the metro. Use the official taxi rank and insist on the meter.
Best for whom
- Budget travellers and solo visitors heading near an M2 stop: M11 metro.
- Late-night or early-morning arrivals: Havaist (24/7 on many routes) or a taxi, since the metro does not run overnight.
- Groups or travellers with heavy luggage: a taxi can be competitive once split between passengers.
- First-timers wanting one simple ride to a known point: Havaist.
