The Dubai Metro Red Line is the cheapest and most reliable way from DXB into the city — single fares of roughly AED 3 to AED 7.50 depending on how many zones you cross, with stations inside Terminals 1 and 3. A taxi is far quicker door-to-door and runs around the clock, but typically costs AED 50–100 or more to popular areas. For most daytime trips the Metro wins on price and predictability; a taxi wins for luggage, groups, late arrivals and when the Metro is closed.
Your main options
DXB connects to the city by the Dubai Metro Red Line, public buses and taxis (plus ride-hailing apps such as Uber, Careem and Bolt). The right pick depends on your budget, your luggage, the time of day and exactly where you are heading.
Comparison: DXB to the city
| Option | Journey time | Indicative fare (one-way)* | Frequency / hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai Metro (Red Line) | ~15–40 min depending on destination | ~AED 3–7.50 by zone (Silver Nol card) | Every ~2–7 min; approx 5am–midnight (later Fri, from 8am Sun) | Stations in Terminals 1 & 3; needs a Nol card |
| Public bus (RTA) | Varies; often slower than Metro | Low, by zone with Nol card | Scheduled routes; 24h on some lines | Useful where Metro does not reach |
| Taxi (RTA) / ride-hailing | ~15–40 min (traffic-dependent) | Meter from AED 25 start; ~AED 50–100+ to popular areas | On demand, 24 hours | Door-to-door; best for luggage / groups |
*Fares and times are indicative and change — Metro zone fares, the daily fare cap and taxi tariffs are set by the RTA and reviewed periodically. Verify the current price on the official source before you travel. A Silver Nol card (around AED 25, including travel credit) is needed for Metro and buses; a single-use Red ticket is also available. The taxi meter starts at AED 25 at the airport and rises with distance, so the final fare depends on your destination and traffic.
The verdict: Metro vs taxi
- Cheapest and most predictable — Dubai Metro: with stations built into Terminals 1 and 3, single fares of about AED 3–7.50 and trains every few minutes, the Red Line beats a taxi on price and avoids traffic. Best when you are travelling light and heading near a Metro station.
- Fastest door-to-door — taxi: no walking with bags, no changes, and it runs 24 hours including when the Metro is closed. Expect to pay several times the Metro fare — but split between three or four people it can be competitive.
- Bus: cheap and useful for destinations the Metro does not serve, but generally slower; best for travellers comfortable with public transport.
