The Airport Express (MTR) is the fastest and most reliable way into the city — about 24 minutes to Hong Kong Station, with trains roughly every 10 minutes. The Cityflyer buses (such as the A11 and A21) are much cheaper but take around 70–80 minutes, while a taxi is best for door-to-door convenience, heavy luggage or late arrivals.
Your main options
Hong Kong International Airport connects to the city by the dedicated Airport Express rail line, by frequent Cityflyer airport buses, and by metered taxi. The right pick depends on your budget, your luggage and exactly where you are heading.

*Fares and times are indicative and change frequently. Airport Express fares in particular have been subject to a fare-adjustment proposal, so the exact single fare should be checked on the official MTR site before you travel. Taxi estimates come from third-party fare guides (the official airport taxi page could not be confirmed) and depend on traffic, tolls and luggage — treat them as unconfirmed until checked.
The verdict
- Best overall — Airport Express: by far the fastest and most predictable, immune to road traffic, with free shuttle buses linking Hong Kong and Kowloon stations to major hotels. The default choice for most visitors. Octopus and group fares cut the cost noticeably.
- Cheapest — Cityflyer bus: a fraction of the rail or taxi fare and stops at many city locations, but far slower and exposed to traffic. Good if you are not in a hurry and your stop is on the route.
- Taxi: only for door-to-door convenience, late-night arrivals, heavy bags or groups — expect to pay several times the train fare, plus tolls and baggage charges. Note Hong Kong has three taxi colours (red urban, green New Territories, blue Lantau); for most city destinations you want a red urban taxi.
Best for whom
- First-time visitor heading to a central hotel: Airport Express, then a free hotel shuttle from the station.
- Tight on budget and not rushing: Cityflyer bus.
- Late arrival, heavy luggage or travelling as a group: taxi (split between passengers it can be competitive).
