ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a travel authorisation — not a visa — for visa-exempt non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen area for short stays. You apply online before you travel, it is linked to your passport, and it is expected to be valid for up to three years (or until your passport expires). Launch is expected in late 2026, with a transitional period before it becomes mandatory.
EES vs ETIAS vs a Schengen visa
| EES | ETIAS | Schengen visa | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Biometric border record | Pre-travel authorisation | Full visa |
| When | At the border | Before you fly | Before you fly |
| For whom | All non-EU short stays | Visa-exempt nationals | Nationals who need a visa |
| Cost | Free | €20 (under 18 / over 70 exempt — verify) | Higher visa fee |
How to apply (when live)
- Apply online via the official EU ETIAS site with your passport details.
- Most approvals are expected to be quick, but allow time in case of extra checks.
- It is tied to your passport — if you renew your passport, you reapply.
Because the timeline has moved more than once, treat all dates as provisional and confirm on the official page: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. See also our EES guide. Last reviewed: June 2026.
