The MRT is the best all-round way from Changi into the city — roughly 40–50 minutes to the centre for only a few Singapore dollars, with one easy transfer at Tanah Merah. A taxi is the fastest door-to-door option (about 30 minutes to City Hall) but costs far more, and the public bus is the cheapest of all if you are not in a hurry.
Your main options
Changi connects to central Singapore by the MRT (rail), public buses and taxis (plus app-based private hire). The right pick depends on your budget, your luggage, the time of day and exactly where you are heading.
Comparison: Changi to the city centre
| Option | Journey time | Indicative fare (one-way)* | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MRT (East-West Line) | ~40–50 min to City Hall, incl. transfer | From ~S$2 with EZ-Link/contactless | Every ~6–9 min | Change at Tanah Merah; first ~5:30am, last from airport ~11:15pm |
| Public bus (e.g. 36) | ~60–70 min to Orchard Road | ~S$1.50–S$2 with EZ-Link | Frequent daytime | Cheapest; slow and limited luggage space |
| Taxi | ~30 min to City Hall (traffic-dependent) | ~S$25–S$50+ incl. airport & time surcharges | On demand | Door-to-door; late-night/peak surcharges stack |
*Fares and times are indicative and change frequently. Public-transport fares were revised in Singapore from late December 2025, so verify the current fare officially before you travel. MRT and bus fares are cheaper with an EZ-Link card or contactless pay-as-you-go than single tickets. The verdict
- Best overall — MRT: cheap, predictable and frequent, with one simple transfer at Tanah Merah onto the East-West Line. The default choice for most visitors who can manage their luggage.
- Cheapest — public bus: a dollar or two to the city, but slow (60–70 minutes), with limited room for big bags. Best for light travellers on a tight budget.
- Fastest / easiest — taxi: around 30 minutes door-to-door, but several times the MRT fare once airport and peak/late-night surcharges are added. Worth it for groups, heavy luggage or late arrivals.
