For value, the new LAX/Metro Transit Center plus a Metro train is now the cheapest way into Los Angeles — a free shuttle from your terminal, then a Metro fare from about US$1.75. The FlyAway bus is the simplest one-seat ride to Union Station, a taxi is fastest door-to-door at a fixed downtown flat rate, and rideshare is convenient but the airport fees are rising.
What changed at LAX in 2026
Two big shifts matter. First, the LAX/Metro Transit Center opened in June 2025, connecting Metro's C Line and K Line to the airport via a free shuttle bus that runs between the transit centre and every terminal. Second, the long-awaited Automated People Mover (APM / SkyLink) is still in testing as of June 2026 with no confirmed passenger opening date — so today you still use the free shuttle, and taxis and rideshare still pick up at the LAX-it lot. Verify the APM's status and any new rideshare fees officially before you travel, as these are changing.
Comparison: LAX to Los Angeles
| Option | Journey time | Indicative fare (one-way)* | Frequency | Goes to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free shuttle + Metro C/K line | ~45–70 min to Downtown (incl. shuttle + transfer) | Free shuttle + Metro from ~US$1.75 | Shuttle ~every 10 min; trains frequent | Downtown LA and the Metro network via transfer |
| FlyAway bus (Union Station) | ~45–60 min to Union Station | ~US$9.75–US$12.75 (sources differ — verify) | Every ~30–60 min | LA Union Station (nonstop) |
| Taxi (from LAX-it) | ~25–45 min to Downtown (traffic-dependent) | ~US$51 flat rate to Downtown zone (+ airport fee) | On demand, 24/7 | Any door-to-door |
| Uber / Lyft (from LAX-it) | ~25–45 min (traffic-dependent) | Varies + airport fee (fees rising — verify) | On demand | Any door-to-door |
*Fares and times are indicative and change frequently. The FlyAway fare is shown as a range because official and secondary sources differ (commonly US$9.75 to US$12.75) — confirm the live price before you travel. Rideshare airport fees at LAX are being increased in stages, so verify the current fee in your app.
The verdict
- Cheapest — free shuttle + Metro: a free terminal shuttle to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, then the C or K line, gets you across LA for a low Metro fare. Best on price; allow extra time for the shuttle and a transfer, and note Downtown usually needs one change.
- Simplest one-seat ride — FlyAway bus: nonstop from the terminals to Union Station with luggage space and no transfers. Ideal if Union Station suits you.
- Fastest door-to-door — taxi: a fixed flat rate into the Downtown zone makes the cost predictable; metered elsewhere. Best for heavy luggage, groups or late arrivals.
- Rideshare — Uber / Lyft: convenient from LAX-it, but airport fees are climbing in 2026 — check the in-app total before committing.
Best for whom
- Budget travellers: free shuttle + Metro.
- Heading to Union Station or Downtown with luggage: FlyAway bus.
- Late arrival, heavy bags or a group: taxi (the Downtown flat rate splits well between passengers).
- Door-to-door to a specific address: taxi or rideshare, traffic permitting.
